Porky's revenge

When we arrived at the shelter last night, we noticed a lot of gouge marks from some animal on the wood of the shelter. Even up on the rails of the top bunks and the loft. We assumed it was from a bear and hoped it wouldn't come back with people there. At 4am we awoke to what sounded like someone taking a rasp to the shelter. Turning on headlights, we saw a porcupine gnawing at the floor. Shouting didn't phase it, only flashing our lights at it finally made it climb out of the shelter and waddle off into the night. First porcupine I've seen in the wild. Surprised at how sloth-like they appear.

Once the day came we started out on the last day's hike. Left the Tom Leonard shelter a little earlier to try to beat the rain in the forecast. We've had excellent cell coverage on the trail this trip, much better than at the hotel in Stockbridge. Our original plan was to camp at the Shaker campsite tonight, then meet Donna at Tyringham Main Road on Saturday morning. With the forecast for rain all night and temps dropping into the 40's, we decided to push on to the end point today and enjoy a warm dry night in a hotel. It rained the last three hours on the trail which made all the roots and rocks slick, but to only have that little rain for whole week was nice. Getting to the hotel meant a warm shower, then a great pizza and beer.
