Off to the Camino de Santiago Again

Well it's back to the Camino de Santiago this month. The issue that forced me to rush home last year is resolved fortunately and life is almost back to normal. I say almost because our son Matthew and his wonderful wife Karen made us grandparents last November with a lovely girl named Lillian. Since they live in Northern California, life has been busy, especially travelling up to see them all. If I was to do any sort of hike this year it would have to a short one and since I enjoyed my brief experience last year, I thought revisiting the Camino met that goal. Last year I was planning to finish the Camino Frances and then head south on the Camino Portugues. This time I'm flying to Lisbon on the 26th/27th March and then hiking the Camino Portugues in the correct direction north to Santiago. This will be a lot easier as the signs only point in one direction on the Caminos, all taking hikers to Santiago not away from it. All being well, I then plan to do the short (90 km) Camino Fisterra out to the Atlantic Ocean, return to Santiago on a bus and then head eastwards on the Camino Frances in the opposite direction to Carrion, the point where I had to stop last year. I've planned 35 days for this and that should be quite a comfortable timeframe as it's a slightly shorter daily distance than what I achieved in 11 days last year. If there is any significant time left over, I discovered there is the Camino Madrid that joins the Camino Frances really close to Carrion. I'll try to do some of that Camino going south (also the wrong way) heading towards Madrid. But to do it all will increase the daily pace to several kilometers more than last year and since I don't want to be on any pressured schedule (I had enough of that when I was working) I'll most probably have to figure out a train ride to make it to Madrid airport in time for my return flight on 2nd May.

So that is the plan for now, but expect some changes as always. As with all my other hikes, I will write a daily journal and Matthew will edit out all the gibberish and typos and post it for me along with photos on Postholer. I'll also carry my Spot and Postholer will receive my location each evening. If you just click on the map, then you will see my daily "breadcrumbs" and get a current location even though the journal entries might be a little delayed.

Gear-wise, I'm taking my lightweight backpack again but this time I'm not including the tent or sleeping pad. There are so many places to get a bed for the night, they were really unnecessary "just in case" items. I did get new raingear so that is the only real change. The long term weather forecast already shows rain the first few days so hopefully I'm prepared. I just got back from nine days of skiing and have been hiking regularly on my local land preserve to get all the body parts in shape. So I'm as prepared as I think I can be. I'm going to try and do this hike without poles, but if that doesn't work out, there will be plenty of places to buy another pair.

That's it for now. I'll post again when I get to Lisbon.

Camino De Santiago - Part Deux

The Camino de Santiago is the name of any of the pilgrimage routes to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried. Many take up this route as a form of spiritual path or retreat, for their spiritual growth.
