Hey, yesterday, today and the foreseeable future will have us sitting here on the sofa surrounded by mountains of notebooks, maps and guides. It's a world away from the simplicity of putting one foot ahead of another.
Planning to be FLEXIBLE sure takes a hell of alot of planning!
Having the Trail layed out in front of you gives a scale of what hikers achieve every year,
Anyone looking through the window would see us with stupidly wide grins, TBW pct videos playing on the teleivison(you know your a PCT addict when you use quotes from youtube videos in daily life). They are a great resource and give insights into how people structure their day to day hike, what they wear, trail terrain, how they set up camp and conditions etc which might normally not be included in journals due to time constraints out on the trail.
Making arbituary descisons while in the comfort of a house might be bizzare, but the framework sure is useful to simplify the logistics because we are not US based.
Since hiking the AT we have become alot lighter weight hikers, (we were the guys with the massive packs 22.5kgs and 19kgs) gear is strewn around the room with postit notes of their wieght attachted, we are awaiting custom backpacks from germany, to see if the small fortune in cuben fiber(pixie dust) gear will fit in.
Reducing the amount of gear we take helps, and this time I might be able to keep track of everything and not lose it along the way.
Well back to it I guess, shoes are next to decide on, R.D. is a stronger hiker than I and can use most trail runners, due my gimpy right foot I have orthotics and have to use a control oriented shoe which helps me keep up.
