Maps - mileage

What mileages are to be trusted, those on these maps, or those in the Databook? For example, the Databook (and water report pages) show the Boulder Oaks Campground (just south of I8) at 26.4, but the mouse-over mileage on the interactive map shows mile 26 to be well north of I8.

The databook says it's 5.8 miles from Lake Morena to Boulder Oaks CG. The postholer maps say it's 5.9.

The databook says it's 1698 miles to Oregon, the postholer maps say it's 1705, that's 7 miles difference in 1700! Or %0.005 error. Or +/- 400 feet of daily walking over a period of 90 days. Talk about splitting hairs.

Let me save you some heartache.

If you're looking for exactness from any mileage source you won't find it.

The postholer maps mileages are calculated, that is, determined differently than the databook.

Either source of mileages will give you a very close approximation of 'how far' to the next point. But you'll never know 'exactly'.

So, the answer to your question is a real toughy...you choose. :)
