Postholer Snow Page - Complete Overhaul

Postby postholer » Sun Feb 21, 2016 6:01 pm

The Postholer Snow Page has undergone a total and complete rewrite.

In the past we relied solely on Snotel or CDEC snow sensors for trail conditions. The on-going problem with that is they are so few and far between. If you're monitoring snow pack that's fine. But we as hikers need to know what's going on with snow on the trail, not a entire mountain range. That brings us to:

The New Postholer Snow Page

Snow pack is not trail snow.

'Snow pack' is determined from relatively few physical snow sensors covering an entire mountain range, of which most are not on or near the trail. For instance, the previous postholer snow page relied on 26 sensors across 1,900 miles of the trail. The first 700 miles of trail has no sensors, thus no coverage.

The charts here rely enitrely on remote sensing data from NSIDC.org. For example, the PCT has 5,300+ data points or a point every half mile/within a half mile of the trail or better. The CDT has 6,000+ data points. This is a huge improvement in accuracy. This is the most detailed look at trail snow to be found anywhere.

Love it.

Any chance there will be a feature to allow focusing into smaller slices of the trail? We would love to be able to see a plot like this "up close" Washington for the obvious reason that it would help in planning on when we can get out to start working on the trail.

The next step will be to have snow by trail sections, then those images will be incorporated into the on line data books. The amount and quality of the data is totally suited to this.

If you need something specific send me an email with what you'd like. However, use this feature sparingly! :D

I've made available a very large image to the full extent of data resolution for each trail. Click on the 'Large Full Detail Image' link on the snow page.

Nice...even better than the one I saw yesterday.

I don't know how you do it, but you keep hitting home runs with this data.

We've added a snow table with hundreds of locations for each trail. The snowiest locations are first descending to the the less snowy locations, that is, SWE ordered highest to lowest for the date.

Only locations with an average SWE > 3 inches for that date are included.
