The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader

I want to make a brief plug for The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader, a two-volume anthology of classic works of regional writing and boot-tested stories from the trail just published by The Mountaineers Books. This is not a self-serving plug as ALL author royalties are being donated to the PCTA for the support and preservation of the PCT ($4,000 has already been given to the PCTA). It is a good holiday gift for the seasoned PCT veteran as well as those living it vicariously from their armchairs. The stories are geographically linked to the trail as it moves from south to north . . . a real literary companion. Authors include Wallace Stegner, Jack Kerouac, Barry Lopez, John Muir, and Norman Clyde as well as more contemporary hiker writers like Monte Dodge, Hank Meals, Barbara Egbert, Angela Ballard, Bob Holtel, Carolyn "Sweet Goat Mama" Eddy, and Barney Mann.

The books are available through the PCTA, the Mountaineers Books, many local bookstores, and, of course, Amazon.

We have also created a website - - where we are posting other stories that we receive from hiker writers. Submit your story!
