A new trail has been built above Winfield that eliminates the road walk along Clear Creek. The trail starts one half mile NW from Winfield, climbs the dirt road past the cemetery, turns east and side hills for almost 3 miles to end at the trail going north over Hope Pass. Adds about a mile but gets you off road. This is Map 42 in the Bear Creek Survey Map Book and hopefully will get updated in future editions.

I went to Clear Creek a few weeks ago and mapped what is done. The trail is not complete yet, but the part connecting Sheep Gulch to Winfield is, so the 2013 map will have hikers going that way then getting back on the road at Winfield. Hopefully, the entire segment will be finished next season. The remaining work is in wilderness with a lot of trees to cut so it will probably be slow going.

Also hiked in and looked at the ridgetop reroute under construction south of Cottonwood Creek. It lacks about 1-1/2 miles in tough terrain to be complete. There is a chance it will be finished in 2013.
