for now i can only afford 2.5 weeks in july/august and the same in nov/dec to do any real hiking. ive heard that parts of new mexico are hikeable on the cdt in winter. what do you all know? my grandparents live in deming near columbus and could probably help me with water caches. thanks -Barry Bones

The area around Deming would probably be the best candidate for NM winter hiking. It's the lowest elevation section of the CDT. You have family support, and weather is warmer there than other northern parts of NM. Just know that the cold and short days will slow you down, so don't expect to make fantastic mileage.

Here's DEC2016 weather data for Deming so you know what to prepare for.

Sorry for the necroposting, but I've hiked in the winter in a very similar climate (the desert in Southern Spain), and yes, there's always a tendency to underestimate the cold because "come on, do they even know what the cold is there?" and you expect to hike like you'd do in ideal conditions, but it isn't like that.
You either wear relatively light clothing and are slowed down (or have to stop your trail altogether) if you're expecting it to be warmer, and if you dress appropriately, you'll be covered by heavier clothing and will carry more stuff in your backpack.
