Summer Work Parties Available - Washington

Postby North 350 Blades » Sat Jan 26, 2013 5:26 pm

Its that time of year where those of us PCT volunteers up here in Washington start scheduling our summer maintenance season projects.

I'd like to draw your attention to Washington Trails Association and the great work they do, not only on the PCT in Washington, but on ALL the trails of the Evergreen State. WTA just posted a preview of their spring, summer and fall season Volunteer Vacations and Back Country Response Team (BCRT) trips.

Go to either

http://www.wta.org

and click on the "Volunteer Work Parties" link under the "Volunteer" tab on the top of the page to get to the list or just go straight there with

http://www.wta.org/volunteer/trail-work-parties

All the volunteer vacations and BCRT trips show as "full" as of this post but that's just because they haven't opened them just yet. Sign up's open up at 10am Pacific Standard Time on February 4th and be aware - the most popular trips fill up very quickly.

Work parties on the PCT include:

June 24-29 Agnes Creek Logout (south of Stehekin). This is a strenious BCRT trip to log out winter blow down using old school cross cut saws in the Wilderness.
August 3 - 10 White Pass (near Glacier Peak) - volunteer vacation. The description says they'll pack in EVERYTHING except the shirt on your back.
August 8-11 Trails north of White Pass (the Highway 12 White Pass) - this BCRT will log out the PCT north from White Pass and then loop back on other trails, sawing as you go.
August 10-17 at Pear Lake - Volunteer Vacation. I love this lake and the surrounding area. Great scenery to enjoy on your day off. This lake is a great campsite on the first night north from Stevens Pass on your thru hike.
August 31 - Sept 7 at Deep Lake - Volunteer Vacation in the stunning Alpine Lakes Wilderness. About 2 trail days north of Snoqualmie Pass, you'll approach from a trail head to the east so your hike in will be a lot shorter than the thru hikers have to do to get to this spot. And this is prime thru hiker season at this spot as well - the leading parts of the herd will be passing through this area during this work party.

Bump yet again.

In looking at WTA's site, there are still spots open on the following PCT work parties:

There is still one spot available for a back country youth work party at White Pass (near Glacier Peak) Washington between August 10 and 17.
There are still 6 spots available at the beautiful (IMO) Deep Lake Volunteer Vacation from August 31 to September 7. This is deep in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, one of the gems of the PCT.
There are multiple spots open for a back country youth work party at Pear Lake (north of Stevens Pass) between August 17 and 24.

From the PCTA, they've recently posted opportunities to join up with 4 (!!!!) EarthCorps crews in the Deception Lakes Area (Section J - Snoqualmie Pass and Stevens Pass). Each of these trips will have room for 4 volunteers to join the Corps crew. Dates are August 2 to August 6, August 8 to August 12, August 18 to August 24 and August 31 to September 4.

In addition, our crew, the North 350 Blades, will soon be ready to announce a couple back country trips in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness as well (we're working logistical details.)
