North 350 Blades Scheduled "Big" projects for 2013

Postby North 350 Blades » Mon May 13, 2013 2:32 pm

Our scheduled Projects for 2013. Note these projects are between White Pass (Hwy 12, south end of Section I) and Stevens Pass (Highway 2, north end of Section J) in Washington:

All ladies trip August 11 to 17 in the Lemah Creek area of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Pack stock will bring in the tools, food and camp kitchen. Brushing and tread repair will be the tasks. 12 volunteers needed including a camp host / cook.

August 17 and 18 car camp weekend at White Pass (Highway 12). General maintenance both north and south of the highway. The more the merrier on this one.

August 23-25 car camp extended weekend south of Snoqualmie Pass. Power brushing and general tread maintenance. The more the merrier on this one. This will be our 3rd annual Cascade Crest 100 weekend work project where we're doing "just in time" improvements and maintenance to the PCT right before the ultra runners come on through.

September 6-8 car camp extended weekend at Chinook Pass / Highway 410. Tread restoration north of the pass plus ancillary brushing. The more the merrier on this one.

September 7 to 13 on the north slopes of Mt. Daniel in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Camp will be near the Hyas Lake area with about a 1/2 hour hike to the project site daily. Pack stock will bring in the tools, food and camp kitchen. Brushing and tread repair will be the task. This will be a joint project with the USFS Cle Elum trail crew who will join the volunteers between the 9th and 13th. We need 7 volunteers in total to work with the 4 USFS trail crew members plus a volunteer for the camp cook / host position.

In addition to the above scheduled North 350 Blades / PCTA projects, there will also be several other scheduled back country projects that have openings for volunteers. A total of 4 Earthcorps / PCTA crews will be at Deception Lake for various time stretches between August 2 and September 4 with room for 4 volunteers per crew. There are also a pair of USFS Cle Elum Ranger District crews that can use 3 supplemental volunteers each - August 5 to 9 at Delate Creek and another one August 19 to the 23rd at Park Lakes working the Chikamin Ridge area. These USFS trips sound like they'll be a blast.

The Blades will also be doing substantial log out in July - from the Wilderness boundary just north of Snoqualmie Pass south to south of Tacoma Pass - call it 35+ trail miles, with single day projects (thanks to the good access on this stretch of the trail). We'll need folks to fill out the chain and cross cut saw teams on these days. After the Mt. Daniel project in September, we'll be back to single day projects in the Snoqualmie Pass and Stevens Pass areas - brushing and doing tread work.

As is always the case with PCTA maintenance projects, there is no cost to the volunteer. For all multi-day projects (except the USFS crews looking for 3 supplemental volunteers) food is provided for the entire trip from dinner the first night until the project is done (either breakfast or lunch on the last day, depending on the exit details). With the couple of USFS crews looking for supplemental volunteers, folks will need to bring their own eats.
