2016 Trail Crew Training

Postby North 350 Blades » Tue Mar 08, 2016 12:53 pm

Want to help the hikers? Here is one way - help make the trail a pleasant place to hike.

Typically the trail crews will train you "on the job" if you're brand new to trail crew. If you're "in to" trail crew and want to learn even more, there are multiple Trail Skills Colleges (TSC) and saw certification classes up and down the PCT run by the Pacific Crest Trail Association. There is a full spectrum of classes available, from classes on tread and drainage construction and maintenance, classes on proper brushing and scouting, classes on structures such as turnpikes, bridges, puncheons and gabions, classes on leadership and project planning, classes on both signage and decommissioning, and a variety of saw classes like intro to saw crew, practicum and certification classes for both chain and crosscut saws.

Full listings are at:

Here are some of the training events in 2016, typically put on by the PCTA and various partner groups, such as Washington Trails Association, the High Cascade Forest Volunteers, USFS and the like.:

Columbia Cascades TSC April 22-24 at Cascade Locks, Oregon
North Cascades TSC April 30-May1at Concrete, Washington
Santiam TSC May 13-16 near Detroit, Oregon
Allingham TSC June 2-5 near Sisters, Oregon
Big Bend TSC June 10-12 near Hyatt Lake, Oregon
Tahoe TSC July 15-17 near Lake Tahoe, California

Saw Cert Events. Note, that to use a chainsaw or crosscut saw on a volunteer crew, a volunteer must have the proper certification.
Estacada Saw Cert, April 2-3 in Mount Hood National Forest, Clackamas River Ranger District, Oregon
Randle Saw Cert, April 2-3 near Randle, Washington
Darrington Chainsaw Cert, April 9-10, near Darrington, Washington
North Bend Crosscut Cert, April 16-17, near North Bend, Washington
Wind River Saw Cert, April 29-May 1, near Stabler, Washington

There are also Southern California TSC's and Saw Cert events, although the dates for 2016 aren't listed yet.

ALL of this training is free, yes free, to the volunteer.
