Other Side of Wayah Bald
I finally made it out of Franklin today. Cricket and Glenn dropped me off at Winding Stair Gap, and as I exited the vehicle, I muttered a silent prayer to the powers that be that had decided to not grant me children. I could still hear the piercing screams uttered by the small contorted faces as the SUV headed down the road.
Hiking was very pleasant, with a few good ups and downs tackled by a slightly sore toe. It was nice to meet some other hikers. I chatted briefly with Dr. Albert, who then sped quickly away. I also saw Tracker again at Winding Stair Gap, doling out his usual trail magic to excited hikers stumbling down the mountain.
I continuted on, and as afternoon stretched into evening, I met Sunflower. She looked a tad wilted as she had become separated from her group, and was a bit nervous about camping alone. I agreed to camp with her, and once I had set up my camp, I sat for some of the best entertainment of the entire trail...Sunflower hanging her bear bag. Spasms leading to cramps forced me to roll over on my side as I tried desperately not to laugh. Poor Sunflower...I did not want to offend. I can't remember if she stopped from sheer exhaustion or the realization of the futility of the exercise. Either way, it is good she stopped, for I may have stroked out if she had not.
I slept well tonight, and there were no bear visits.
