Disappointing HoJo's

The Howard Johnson's in Williamstown, MA, was a disappoinment this morning. Free continental breakfast was one of the selling points, but at 7am the office was locked and there was no food. So we walked down to Dunkin donuts for breakfast. Unfortunately the 2 miles from the hotel to the trail doesn't count toward AT miles. Williamstown lies along the Hoosic River, and that means one thing - a big climb out with a lot of food. A couple of miles down the trail, we crossed into Vermont, finishing another state. The day started cold with a heavy frost, but it was fine as long you were moving. When we stopped for lunch, we quickly had to add layers to stay warm. The trail didn't do anything significant today, just felt like we were connecting pieces. The AT and the Long Trail share 105 miles, so we were on both today. Passed a few ponds, but one had an amazing beaver dam that formed a large curve. When we got to the shelter, a trail couple was there, Loins of Arabia and Trashpanda. They met during their second week on the trail and are about 3/4's done by now. It's going to be a cold night, 7pm and everyone is in their bag already.
