Part test message, part introduction to blogging my hike.
It is March 7th and I'm working mostly on cleaning the house, getting ready for renters. I've got a lot of hike-related work still to do also. I've decided that I'm under-prepared but not unpreapred. At this point the I'm just going to have get out there, start hiking and let the trail kick my butt in the beginning.
I am hoping to update this journal nearly daily from the trail, but I'll have to wait and see. Most folks use trailjournals.com but postholer is much more mobile phone friendly. I should be able to e-mail entries in from the trail when I have cell coverage. As I'm not a texter and don't have good thumb typing skills, don't expect extensive entres from the field.
Planned Hike Start: March 20 from Amicalola State Park - with teh approach trail (this isn't officially part of the Appalachian Trail).
Planned Hike End: Sometime to allow me back at work September 30.
There will be a lot of abbreviations/terms that are hiking related throughout the blog. A good place to get definitions is: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8115
Some common ones:
AT - Appalachian Trail
GAME - Georgia to Maine
MEGA - Maine to Georgia
NOBO - short for NOrth BOund - referring to direction of the hike
SOBO - short for SOuth BOund
thru - as in thru-hike, meaning a one-hiking season completion of the entire traile
white blaze - the traditional marking of the AT - a white paint mark of a small rectangle
blue blaze - the color of many side trailer markers - some are short cuts and purists would argue blue blazes shouldn't be included on a thru
zero day - a day spent in town or the like in which no hiking is complete
nero day - a day primarily spent doing things other than hiking
