Getting ready...

I've decided to keep a journal while I'm hiking the Appalachian Trail. I don't know who, if anyone, might be interested in my activities, but what the heck... My hike is not for another seven months, so I have ample time to prepare. I'm chomping at the bit to begin, but I'm sure March will be here before I know it. I'll take advantage of this time by trying to get myself into better physical condition. I have really allowed myself to become quite lax in this area, and I am determined to get a handle on it. Having a big goal (hiking the AT) will help me to stay focused on what I need to do, i.e. the intermediate goal (getting in shape), as I learned in completing a triathlon in 2009. All it takes is slow but steady progress, plus a lot of determination. I've been doing a ton of research about the trail and what it takes to hike it, and I am psyched! My biggest regret, and it's a biggie to be sure, is that none of my immediate family has any interest in joining me on this hike. I would so love to have one of them with me! Maybe once my hike commences one or more of them will decide to surprise me for a couple of days on the trail (hint hint). At least I'll have my dear niece Anne with me for a little while, and my precious canine friend, Tessa. Besides, from what I've read, I'm confident that I'll meet a lot of wonderful people along the way. I'm not worried about it at all. I hiked about 5 miles today in an hour and a half, in Pedernales falls. I saw the sun come up as I hiked. It was beautiful! I also saw numerous cottontail cute! The Pedernales Falls hike was good, and one that I intend to repeat on a regular basis. It has just enough elevation change to make it a bit of a workout without being too grueling.
