Amicalola Falls

Amicalola, Springer, and Blood mtn

The approach trail was beautiful. Climbed hundreds of steps in fog. Everytime it began to rain i deployed my umbrella and it quit. I reached the top of Springer mt in a few hours ascending through fog shrouded dogwood forest. I almost walked past the southern terminus of the AT as the 9 Mile Approach trail was enough to kick me into turbo mode. All together i hiked 19 miles the first day and made a stealth camp in the fog above horse gap. This morning the skies began to clear and eventually became sunny. The trail climbs and descends all day retaking the same 500 feet over and over. It is beautiful here. The trail is well marked and the tread is a soft leaf duff in most places. I made it to Blood mountain at 4400 feet this afternoon and the views of the Georgia ridgelines in the late sunlight were amazing. Made 23 miles today easy. I am stealth camped about a mile shy of Neel's gap where I will resupply in the morning. Cheers-Iceaxe
