Paul Bunyon of Maine

Bangor, Maine

Yesterday i swam in the cold Atlantic surf at Sand Beach, Acadia National Park. After a stay at the superb Appalachian Trail Lodge in Millinocket, Bangor Maine was the next step in preparation for my return by plane to California. However there were a few extra days built into my plan so i have been taking advantage of my time in Maine to see what I can of this land at the farthest North-East corner of our country. It has been raining off and on today so i suppose i really lucked out finishing the trail when i did. Still a little more time to reflect on the immense journey i have taken to get here. Like the past long distance trails, the memories of the tough times on the A.T.; rain, lightning, physical pain, are fading fast leaving the warm afterglow of the good times on trail. When i board that plane i will fly over three unbroken lines of footsteps made by my feet along three fantastic trails. The Appalachian trail was, by far, the toughest.

Appalachian Trail-Triple Crown

The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is more than 2,175-mile long footpath stretching through 14 eastern states from Maine to Georgia. Conceived in 1921 and first completed in 1937, it traverses the wild, scenic, wooded, pastoral, and culturally significant lands of the Appalachian Mountains. Learn more: www.appalachiantrail.org
