The rain eventually quit overnight. Woke this morning to machine gun fire followed by loud yelling. Yay army rangers! Was a chillier 33 this morning when I got up. Headed down to get some water and was off around 8.
Seemed like a much easier day. The terrain was more moderate. There were also a lot more non tree filled views. Stopped at several for breaks and picture taking. Crossed Woody Gap today, significant as my first paved road. Sat in the grass by the parking lot there for lunch, got rid of garbage and used fancier outhouse complete with toilet paper. Also changed into flip flops there which I hiked the rest of the day in. My feet thank me. Last several miles were uphill, decided to try the radio, which succeeded in making the miles go more quickly. Seeing as how I have no hiking partners yet I may use it more.
Ran into only 1 hiker today, just before setting up camp. Surprised at how secluded I've managed to stay so far. Not that I'm complaining. Seeing a lot of wildlife. Saw my first snake and a little red bug today in addition to the squirrels and birds. I'm camped alone partway up Blood Mountain. Over the top tomorrow and into Neels gap, my first store!
Appalachian Trail - 2011
"May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds."
