Official Journal Creation

Well I have officially created the journal for our hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2012. Shawn (My girlfriend who has yet to acquire a trail name that sticks) and I will be leaving New Jersey March 18th for Georgia and plan to stay at the Hiker Hostel, starting the approach trail on the 19th. I am so excited now that we are under the 6 month countdown. I think about being on the trail every day. I hiked the AT NOBO in 2007. I started exactly 5 years prior to this hike, March 19, 2007, and finished on October 9, 2007. You can find my journal for that trip on trailjournals.com/hungus

While I love Trail Journals, I had to make the switch to PostHoler for round 2. I will be carrying an iPhone and a camera equip with a Eye-Fi SD card which will give me the ability to update my journal (with photos!) ever night form the trail, assuming I have service. PostHoler is way more user friendly in the fact that I can just send an email and have the journal updated. I could not do this with TJ. With the iPhone I will be able to obtain my GPS coordinates every night (regardless of service) and post them on the journal. This will create a waypoint on a google map with an AT overlay. This will essentially show where we camped every night for 6 months. PostHoler also integrates with Twitter where you can follow me @HungusBTBrew. If I do not have service, I will still write the entries and send them out when I get service. Sometimes there might be a few days without entries and then some days with 3 entries at once.

Shawn and I will both be writing to the same journal. I assume some days just one of us will write but we will both try to contribute. We still have to figure out how to differentiate who is writing to make it easier for everyone to read. We were thinking of something like this...

Hungus: I am having a wonderful time on the trail today.

Shawn: Hungus smells really bad today, he needs a shower.

Over the next 5 months and one week we will be freshening up our gear, continuing to squirrel away those pennies, and get out on as many shakedown hikes as possible. I will be hiking Pearisburg -> Daleville VA with my good friend Tribes Nov 5 thru Nov 13. I plan to update to the journal ever night to really get the hang of email entries.

Cheers,
Hungus and Shawn
