Appalachian Trail Map

A

I awoke this morning to shuttle my friend Southerner to the Southern Terminus of the PCT today.

Having him with us for the last 2 days eased our minds tremendously, but it also amped our souls deliciously.

Many Q&A sessions were had, and a viewing of the new PCT Documentary 6 Million Steps: A Journey Inward was enjoyed during his stay.

Southerner trekked across the Appalachian trail 2 years ago, and his PCT planning has been coming along since that ended. Though he hiked the more traditional northern route, he still had some fantastic insight, and encouragement for us. Our beginning is "epic" he kept telling us. We are starting up the most appetizing mountain I could think of, and the trails our body & mind are going to encounter are priceless. I am ready to just break my body down, and enjoy each thorough second.

It was a progressively chilly drive to Campo, CA, the beginning of his new endeavor. We began with 55 degree temps in North Park, San Diego and by the time we encroached upon the Mexico border the temps were down to 38. Southerner became visibly more anxious, and hyper with each push of the gas pedal. I had to pull over to ask a border patrol agent where the exact drop off was. Once he pulled his cigarette from his lips he mentioned it was straight ahead in a breath of smoke. I thanked him and his M-16 as we throttled through. YEAH, he was clothed in an M-16 semi automatic. Things are serious now. Southerner had never seen this type of heat so close to the beginning of a trail, and that was a bit unsettling. Onward we pushed, and the reward was a semi busy drop off. There were a half dozen PCT thru hikers beginning their hike. THIS IS WHEN IT SETTLED IN MY SOUL THAT I AM SOOOO CLOSE TO THE SAME FEELING.

I wished Southerner some great tread along his 6 million steps, and he did the same for me! Only 54 days left!
