Two weeks and counting! On 3-17-14, Richard Birss AKA Dusty and I, will be flying out to Atlanta and hooking up with the folks at the Hiker's Hostel. If all goes as planned we'll be hitting trail on the 18th. The Western mountains have been my backyard and playground all my life, and now in my early 60s, I'll finally be getting a shot at living in and getting to know the Appalachians. Getting to know them step by step, one foot at a time. The best way to feel a new terrain is up from the bottom, right up through the feet, dirt, blisters and all.
Being a California kid, I'm always rain starved, and from all I've heard, I'll get my fill. I'm looking forward to a trail that smells of leaves and moisture and old, old soil and of meeting more of the folks who call these mountains home. On each of my other two thru hikes, the PCT and CDT, I've come to know quite a number of mountain folk, Northern and Southern, who were out West getting to know my mountains. I've been impressed with their depth and caring and honesty, and of their love of the wild and beautiful parts of this country. I'm looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones as my tramp moves northward over the summer.
Each long trail adventure has brought me magic and beauty beyond my imaginings and I can hope no less from these venerable and oh so green Appalachians.
