Almost There...

Today was an easy walk from Abol Bridge to the campground at the base of Katahdin. Since we only expected it to take a few hours, we relaxed in the morning at the camp store. Had ice cream for breakfast and picked up snacks for today and tomorrow. The trail itself was nicely groomed, wide and flat. We saw Big Niagara Falls, which were nothing like the real Niagara Falls but nice anyway.

I got a campsite with Blaze, Ambassador, Smiles, Jackrabbit, and Slider. We hung out, looking through pictures from the whole trip. It was funny to see how much the guys had changed over time with beards and weight loss (I look basically the same). We are all feeling excited for tomorrow. Happy to be summiting with this group. It is hard to believe I've actually reached Katahdin, a mountain which has seemed unreal at times and just very distant at others. I am ready to be done hiking everyday, done packing all my damp belongings up and carrying them in a smelly backpack. But I know I'll miss the simplicity of this experience. Going to bed at 9 and never setting an alarm. Sitting in a circle around the campfire boiling water, discussing the merits of different snack and dinner options. Walk, Eat, Sleep, Repeat. And I'll miss the people. Blaze exclaiming "down goes Doc" as I fall for the 100th time. Ambassador playing "You Found Me" by The Fray anytime I give inaccurate information about the upcoming trail. Everyone joking that it's never too late to quit even though we are all way too invested: emotionally and physically. I don't normally make friends really quickly, but on the trail if you hike with someone for a week it's like you've know them forever. I feel like I have an awesome network of friends all over the country.
