Free At Last

Waking up this morning was a process. After the long day yesterday, my body
was rejecting what I was about to ask it too do and that was move. I could
go through the list of ailments but suffice to say that the whole heap was
hurting. Plus to boot the fine privy that was at the shelter was very low
to the floor so squatting down and getting back up added an extra dimension
of pain to that activity. That said, we were able to have a final visit
with our hiking companions of the last couple days laughing about the
hammock mishaps of the others at the site during the evening, our short
walk ahead compared to theirs and life in general. The two couples departed
before 7:30am leaving HPP and myself alone to finish breakfast, limber up
and pack our crap for the .9 mile walk to Brandon Gap meeting HPP's parents
for the ride back to civilization.
We hiked in relatively clean clothes this morning packaging up the
offensive articles in plastic bags, stuffing them deep within our packs to
avoid the putrid odors from permeating into the car. We were packed and
hitting the remainder of the trail by 8:45am and it should take us only 30
minutes to reach the road. As we heard the cars whizzing by below, it
became obvious that our Long Trail journey, started six years ago, would be
over soon. As we breached the woods and started to the parking lot, a
slight sense of relief came over me as I glanced across and looked at Mt.
Horrid jutting up from the gap, knowing we had come down that steep hill a
few years back and smiling knowing we wouldn't have to climb it again. As
the parking lot came into view, the blue, wonderful car of my in-laws
waited for us. After greetings and hugs, a couple of snapshots of HPP and
myself were taken in front of the Brandon Gap sign. Cold beer and sodas
along with egg salad sandwiches were wolfed down as HPP and I, for now,
were content with sitting in the back happy that our mode of traveling was
a vehicle and not our boots.

A New Beginning

The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is more than 2,175-mile long footpath stretching through 14 eastern states from Maine to Georgia. Conceived in 1921 and first completed in 1937, it traverses the wild, scenic, wooded, pastoral, and culturally significant lands of the Appalachian Mountains. Learn more: www.appalachiantrail.org
