Appalachian Trail Map
This is an account of my small part in a much larger Journey that spans generations. This particular part of the Journey follows a section along the path of the Appalachian Trail.
My grandfather would take his young family on section hikes of the Appalachian Trail to show them the beauty of Gods creation. Many family memories were made during these hikes, and through them, the seed of a dream to someday hike the entire Trail was planted in my father.
My father started his part of the Journey in Alabama in 2013. He blazed the Pinhoti Trail to the Benton-Mackaye Trail and on to Springer Mountain in Georgia. On Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 11:40am, he stepped onto the Appalachian Trail and set his focus north, towards Mount Katahdin in Maine. His intention was to complete the Trail as a through-hiker that year, but Life had other plans.
One of those other plans involves me. I have the opportunity to accompany my father to Mount Katahdin. Its kind of like a relay race. My father is approaching me carrying the baton, and I have just grabbed hold of it. We are running together, approaching a very difficult, but rewarding lap. Once that lap is complete, but may run a couple more together. Then maybe a few more. Then what I am going to do with the baton? Who knows? But it doesnt matter. I am preparing to walk with my father to accomplish a huge achievement and enjoy Gods beautiful creation. Thats what matters.
My father is Quakerland Forge. I am Duffys Tavern. The goal is Mount Katahdin. So what are we waiting for? Lets go!
