Appalachian Trail Map

A good day

The six am poop alarm rang again. My poison ivy is spreading! Showed up on my hand and thigh also this morning. I figured a week in I would’ve come across somebody hiking the same pace as me. I haven’t, and I’ve come to terms with if I have to hike solo for another 20 miles or 2000, I’m content with it. I’ve been entertaining myself with watching some sort of bug with eggs? attached to their backs. They swarm together, go away when it rains, and their eggs? stick to me, but there’s an open side to the egg. I have no idea. The other guy in the hostel took an etymology class last semester and he doesn’t know either. I need to download an Appalachian field guide so distinct plants and trees and insects don’t blur into one.

Today marks my one week on trail, and my shirt has finally transitioned to shirt & rag.

I walked past a shelter this morning and heard a man tell a bunch of kids, “camel up and you better carry as much water as you can.” There’s maybe three water sources within 3 miles. Misinformed advice...misinformed advice gets repeated, unquestioned and then repeated again. When and how can I skillfully question someone else’s premise, or mine?

Walking up Wesser bald, two accomplished thru hikers, Rev and Happy Joe, caught me. They had been watching my foot placement and gait all morning through the mud, tracking me down. We traded stories for a bit, they pulled over for lunch, and I pushed down to the NOC. The plan was to do a big day since I’ve been taking it easy the past few days, but it’s hard to move through town quick. Shower, laundry, all of a sudden three hours have passed. I met up with Happy Joe and Rev and a few other hikers, drank some beer and ate some food, and decided to stay at the hostel. Tomorrow I’m going to start pushing my body to see what it can do.
