Resume Hike Tomorrow

Tomorrow, as my hike of the AT resumes, it will have been 391 zero days since a couple of hernias forced me off the trail. It was day 90 and mile 1,760 at Goose Pond Road in Lyme, New Hampshire, on July 28, 2017 when I hitched off the trail. Less than 2 weeks later I was in surgery for the laparoscopic repair of 2 inguinal hernias. Everything went well and I am good to go now.

For the last 8 weeks I have been working at Hidden Valley Scout Camp on Griswold Scout Reservation facilitating 5 day backpacking trips for high school age Scouts in the White Montains and the Belknap Range of NH. It is like a thruhike in that I get 1 day off a week to get clean and resupply and then it's back to the trail. We don't cover thruhiker miles but there is all the responcibility for all the young'uns. The last trek ended just last Friday.

Before accepting the camp possition, the plan had been to get back on the trail on July 28th, exactly 1 year after getting off. Since 1998 I had spent 10 summers facilitating backpacking trips at the Valley. It was April 22 when I was contacted. That was late and indicated a bit of desperation so I said yes and postponed my AT completion till after camp. Now the plan was to start today but you what, it's a soggy day today and I have hiked enough in the rain this summer. I know there will be more hiking in the rain to come but there is no real need to start out in a soaker. I'm starting tomorrow! Thursday August 23, 2018!
