Last Trail Night

We got a shuttle ride at 8 AM from the Econolodge with Doc and Chappie. I walked slowly in the morning to savor the 2nd to the last day of the hike. Weather was beautiful--sunnyy weather is like heaven here because it is so rare. Methodist Church trail angels at at old school house had drinks and fruit. At a gas station on Hwy 81, I bought barbecue chicharrones and a 24 oz. beer to drink after we had made camp. I packed the cold beer deep in my pack to keep it cold. The Barn--a traditional stopping place for hikers here--was closed on Mondays. We called Bubba shuttle driver for a shuttle tomorrow to the Roanoke airport. Our last camp on the AT had a beautiful spring pool. There was lots of howling dog noise, bellowing cows and someone operating a mower. I downed the 24 oz beer and savored the last evening on the trail. We hiked through big grassy meadows which seem to be the hallmark of the trail in Virginia. Doc and Chappie passed us for the last time and we said goodbye as they continued on to the northern terminus of the trail at Katahdin in Maine. Ironman and an Australian guy showed up at the campsite. This campsite proved to be extremely noisy from highway traffic.
