Rocket Legs is off to NOC

Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) mile 137

Hiking Day 14: Departure time 11:00 am
Activity: Backpack
I know now why the mountains are so green. About midnight last night it started raining and it was nonstop into the morning. We stayed at Wesser shelter packed in with 5 of us. Two others chose to tent but one of them, named Meow was in the shelter by 7:30 am. The rain was so loud on the metal roof we could hardly hear each other. Ask me for the video link if you like. Thank you to the NHC Nantahala Hiking Club and ATC for building the shelters which offer reprieve from the weather. We had arrived yesterday afternoon at 3 and discussed hiking on another 6 miles to Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) but decided to stay instead. We are still at between 10-12 miles per day and hoping to condition for more. We are all in good spirits and happy to be out here. Kathy stayed up and read another book. She could hear the mice on the roof until it started raining. This is the fourth book so far. Her paper white kindle has been well used. The most intriguing book so far was Tip of the Iceberg (a suggestion from Cousin Eric). The author follows the 1899 Harriman expedition path in Alaska. Great book.

We enjoyed a late morning and left the shelter at 11 making it into NOC by 2:00. There was thunder and lightening up on the ridge as we hiked. We enjoyed a great lunch and spent the evening indoors. We are still hiking with Straycat and had lunch with her and another couple from Florida that are section hikers. We are betting they become thru hikers within the next few years.

Thank you to everyone who has logged into our blog. We saw Chelsea and Rons name pop up yesterday. Its nice to know we have support out there!

We hiked 6 miles, 600 up 2800 down.
