Big Schloss is a wonderful one-night training hike! I did the basic hike as
described in Hiking Upwards but I did it counterclockwise.
Starting at the stony Creek Trail head on FS92, I took the Stony Creek Trail
alongside a babbling brook up to the Mill Mountain Trail. The Stony Creek
part of the loop was an easy steady uphill.
After 3.8 miles, I took a left onto the Mill Mountain Trail heading west
toward Big Schloss. After about a mile Sandstone Spring provided a nice
resting spot and a lovely spring where I filled up with water. At this point
the trail was directly on the ridge line, with West Virginia to the right
and Virginia to the left.
About 7 miles after I left the parking lot, I reached a very big camping
area with two separate fire pits. I set up camp here and relaxed for a while
before hiking the remaining 1.5 miles up to big Schloss to enjoy the sunset
The following day I packed up camp and walked an easy 2.5 miles downhill
back to FS92, where I took a left and walked another mile back to the car.
It was a fantastic loop trail!
