Down from the heights

The day started out mellow--still fairly brisk here in the desert in the morning, so I waited for the rising sun to warm my tent before I got up. Down, down, down from the 8-9,000 foot level into the grass and oaks with the occasional agave. Got momentarily lost as the trail left Scotia Canyon near Parker Lake--the trail sign arrow seemed to point up the dirt road, so I charged up this road and realized my mistake when I was several switchbacks up. I backtracked and saw the trail had actually crossed straight across the road.

Saw my first wildlife of the trip at the spring in Sunnyside Canyon--a flock of turkeys and a white tailed deer. Also saw three equestrians in the canyon.

My "lost" experience shaved off the dwindling minutes of daylight and I was hellbent to get to copiously flowing Parker Creek in Parker Creek CAnyon. Water becomes an obsession here--wondering how good the water reports are, what kind of winter it will be and if the intermittent sources are still flowing. I was using the water report from the Arizona Trail website. but not much current information.

Great camp in Parker Canyon--I made it with a few minutes to spare of daylight. I have to get out of my summer habits of expecting it to be light until 9 PM. Saw no one.
