Arizona Trail Map

North Side

We had seven miles to go to climb out of the Grand Canyon. All seven were excellent.

At the North Rim we immediately saw what was in the miles to come. Cold, snow, and pine. We headed over to the ranger station to fill up our water, our phones, and our bellies with lunch. I think it was 1pm when we finally started hiking again.

The trail parallels forest roads and the highway for much of the rest of the way. We occasionally chose to take the road rather than the trail due to trail conditions, namely blow downs and snow. One of those times we chose the forest road, we heard a crashing in the woods where the Arizona Trail was. Out of the woods came two hulking black masses of animals lumbering along unaware of us. They picked up our scent quickly and sped away. Stretch and I talked loudly for the next half mile to make sure any bears nearby knew we were here. If in fact they were bears. (Or were they bison?)

Past the North Rim park entrance around mile 732 I found a pristine fossil of a bivalve that looked just like a scallop. Stretch found another shortly after. Seems there are plenty around here.

We ended up camping above 9000 feet again. Not ideal but we got in as many miles as we could and will again tomorrow. On to Jacob Lake.
