Prep and Planning
Over the last several years I have been section hiking the AZT. I currently have been able to hike all the passages from the Mexican Boarder up to the LF Ranch near Payson where I ended my last section hike last year in 2015. This spring I am plannning to hike the remaining 380 or so miles of the trail I haven't hiked yet. I have enough PTO from work available to knock the rest of it out in one fell swoop and since I perfer long hikes to shorter ones I figured I'd attempt to complete the rest of it this spring. Also each starting and stopping location of the remaining passages is getting farther and farther away from home, and thus harder to get to and back from, so it makes sense to just get back to the trail and head north until it is complete.
I am planning to resupply at Pine, Mormon Lake, Flagstaff, Tusayan, and Jacob Lake Inn. Like I usually do on longer hikes, I'll be shipping myself about half my food and buying the rest along the way. I find I am able to get a better selection of food on the trail with this method of resupply.
I plan to take the trail that goes around Flagstaff instead of the one the goes through town. I never journalled my other sections on the AZT as most were only a few days at a time with the longest sections being 9 days.
I'll be starting in Mid April and hopefully be finishing in Mid May.
