SlowBro On The Path

Training

Like most of the country, the Pacific Northwest was been experiencing Winter with a capital "W" over the last couple of weeks. Although Eugene has not been hit as hard as Portland, we still have had generous helpings of ice and snow. Today, even though there was a heavy overcast and the temperature was around freezing, seemed like a perfect day to "saddle up" and take my gear out for a hike. A perfect day because there was no precip in the forecast.

So I shouldered my load and headed off along the local hike/bike path. I got a few glances. With my beard growing out and a backpack, people thought I was some homeless guy, but the more astute noticed my trekking poles. Not many homeless guys carry poles. The sharp north wind made for an invigorating walk. I trudged 4 miles down to the end of the valley and the end of the paved trail. I was entertaining the idea of ascending the snowy/slushy half mile up to the Ridgeline Trail when a mud covered runner descended the path and I thought better of it. So I turned around and worked my way back home against the 8mph wind. Although the mercury said 30 degrees the "feels like" temp was about 22 and I can vouch for that. Getting home to a warm house and a cup of hot chocolate was a perfect end to my first real training hike.
