Old Familiar Signs

First Day Back

After my last breakfast at the Downtown Cafe, I returned to the Hostel, stripped the sheets from my bed, grabbed my pack, and made my way down the old creaky stairs. I dumped the linens in the designated hamper and checked out with the desk clerk. Outside I summoned an Uber and 20 minutes later I was dropped off at the trailhead. It was 7:30.

The first 6 miles was generally up over the western shoulder of Mt Humphrey, with about 1,400 feet of elevation gain. The trail moves up through a forest of tall pines with occasional glimpses of the horizon below. Near the top and around to the north side of the mountain Hart Meadow cuts a large swath through the forest.

After the high point just over 9,000 ft, the aspens start appearing among the evergreens, sometimes in large groves. Eventually I dropped back down to 7,600, the elevation at which I started. I am presently camped in one of a group of trees that dot the more open grassland here.

I have encountered one other backpacker, Linda, who is section hiking the AZT. She is roughly my age and not very talkative.

Finally, my foot is doing fine and my first water cache was right where I left it yesterday. So far, so good.
