Arizona Trail Map

Training the Best I Can

Normally when I train for backpacking trips, I start at least 8 weeks in advance and I am in very good condition when the trip starts. I do this for two reasons. First, I like to train, and it gets me out on more overnights and in varied weather than I would otherwise embark upon. Second, my trips are usually only one week long, and I don't want to spend them wishing I was in better shape ie. I want to enjoy the time in the backcountry, and I want to cover about 20 miles per day. So the Arizona trail being a longer hike, I would like to get into the best shape possible for all of the above reasons. Recovery from surgery has thrown a bit of a wrench into my training plans. I am just now (one month from my start date) carring a pack on my regular hikes. I realized yesterday that my expectations are the problem. I realized that all I can do is train the best I can given the time I have, and the level of condition I'm able to achieve pre-hike will not make or break my hike. So today, and everyday until my start date, I shoulder my pack and I hike, and I will arrive at a level of condition that will be perfect for this year's Arizona trail hike!
