Just south of Tusayan to Grand Canyon Village
679.8 to 687.7 for 7.9 miles
It was an uneventful walk to the Canyon. There was some trail until I crossed route 64 and then a blacktop walk the rest of the way. The south rim really is commercial. I went to the Backcountry Office and scored a permit for Cottonwood Campground on the North Kaibab Trail.
I took the Park shuttle (how nice to ride vs walk) to the Village for resupply. I noticed as I tried to make eye contact and smile at people on the shuttle that there was a difference to the people I meet on the trail. Maybe I just smelled bad!
The helicopters and airplanes were frequent overhead with tourists. The Canyon experience for me will be well earned after a 690 mile hike to reach it!
I met two sobo flip flop hikers at the GC Store. They told me that few hikers were hiking the trail between the North Rim and Jacob Lake due to excessive snow depths. It sounds like I'll have a decision to make when I get there.
I took the shuttle back to Tusayan for some well earned town food and shower. I'll get the shuttle at 8am which will put me at the rim by 9am.
