Day 27
The wind howled all night, but we were pretty well sheltered in the pines. Did get pretty cold. We started hiking in our down jackets. We still had 5 more miles of road walk to do. We had nice vistas of Roosevelt Lake below and some interesting rock formations to walk past. The road was quite steep at times, definitely ATV/jeep territory. The trail left the road finally to drop into Boulder Canyon. Why Boulder, when it doesn't have any more rock than any other canyon we've seen?Near the bottom of the canyon there was a new (to us) water source called Crabtree Spring. We followed the short spur trail to it. There were a couple of rock basins holding a good amount of water. Campsite nearby. Good spot if one runs dry on the road walk.Once down Boulder, we had a short climb over a ridge to Sycamore Canyon. This place is a gem, with actual running water. Don't remember the last time I saw a real stream with running water...maybe Mt Lemmon? We passes Woodrow and Kris who were lunching there. We pushed on knowing that the highway and real food couldn't be much farther. After some more uphill, we reached the highway. Hamburger Time!
