Arizona Trail Map
It may not be how I expected the AZT to pan out, but the trail gods have shined some light on this lil' sponge and I get to head BACK to the AZT in just a few weeks :)
When I left the trail in April in Flagstaff, my trail experience was sort of messy - I was heading home to attend my grandmother's funeral, and my foot was in so much pain that I could barely hobble my way to the doctor's office for my last rabies shot. (sidenote: I haven't yet died of rabies, so there's another win). I knew that I had a deadline to head back to work, so I wouldn't be able to hobble my way back on trail before my summer stint of research started back up. So, over the past few months, I went back to real-person living and worked my 9-5 in my windowless office in Salt Lake City all summer, grinding away at a project which is in its final stages before wrapping up. The foot injury I sustained on the trail didn't exactly go away on its own, and I struggled to walk for about a month before having a large grape-sized neuroma excised from my foot! (and to think, I was about to enter the Peace Corps with, well, a large FOOT TUMOR causing me pain).
It was an admittedly painful summer, being held back from all the last trail runs, peaks, and slab climbs that I intended to do in my last months in the U.S. But, now that I've had ample time to recover from my foot procedure, and time to plan out my last few weeks before departing from the states, I've realized that finishing the AZT is totally do-able! So: starting Sept 6th, I'll be hopping back on trail from Flagstaff to the Utah border. I hiked through a damn fight with a bobcat on this trail, and dammit - I'm going to finish this thing this year. Perks for this year's SOBO's: I'll be going through and reporting on all the water sources in early September so there's at least SOME info on water in the first 200 miles of the trail.
It's time for stoke! Just a few more weeks until AZT PART TWO! ...
Squidward: "I forgot to tell you, there's a part two to your gift"
SpongeBob: "Part two? PART TWO PART TWO PART TWO-"
Squidward: "Please, don't do that."
