Plans for the year

Last year Poppa Smurf and I hiked most of the southern half of the AZT. Actually Smurf hiked the entire southern half and I hiked the greater part of it, with several gaps which occurred for various reasons. I stopped at Roosevelt Lake and Smurf went on to Pine.

This year we are planning to do the northern half from Pine to Utah in late May/early June, depending on when we can get our schedules together. In addition I need to do the following segments to catch up with him:
1. Roosevelt to Pine. About 115 miles. Planning to to this with Jellybean in late March.
2. 76.7 Kentucky Camp to 106.1 Sahuarito Road. 30 miles. This was my "food poisoning" gap. I will start this stretch tomorrow.
3. 124.5 X9 Ranch Road (just south of Saguaro NP) to 151.1 Redington Road. 27 miles. The asthma gap.
4. 173.0 Oak groves to 184.0 Summerhaven. 11 miles. This was our "separation gap."
See last year's journal for the gory details of all these gaps.

I will plan to use these gap hikes to help me get in shape for the big stretch from Pine to Utah. I am feeling good, asthma under control, and ready for a good year.
