What, again?

Those of you who know us are probably saying: What, Again? Yes, we've done the AZT a few times. So why do it again? We were looking for a fun spring distance hike. After talking options, we realized that we had such a good time on the trail last year (a spring of phenomenal flower blooms) that we wanted to traverse the state again. Since we live in Arizona, it's pretty easy to plan out the trip. And we have some other ambitious hikes planned for later in the year, so we view this as a great 'training' trip.

Needless to say, as we get older, there will be some groaning as we go along. Why did we want to do this again? But for now, we are excited to see some of our favorite places again!

Today, we went down to Coronado National Memorial and did the short hike to the border with Mexico and back. Kind of a prelude to the hike. It was a windy day, keeping the temps comfortable. No signs of spring here yet. The grasses and other perennials along the trail in the burned area have recovered well. Except for a few burned tree trunks, you wouldn't know this area suffered only a couple of years ago.

We enjoyed the easy hike down and up. Not many people on the trail. Only one thru we met at the border monument. Turns out we met him in Colorado a few years ago when we gave him and some of his friends a ride near Twin Lakes. The thru-hiking world is a small family! He was doing the trail as a start of hiking season that will include the CDT. Good luck to him!

We had planned to start the trail in a couple of days, but a series of storms is moving thru the area. We are ready to go whenever the weather gives us a break going over the Huachucas!
