Mt Garfield and Animas River from Molas Pass trail

Day 24

Day #24. Eating breakfast in Silverton at the Brown Bear Cafe. Some other thru hikers are here including one who talked shop with me over food, and I saw two more last night.

The monsoons have arrived, so for the first time since the first week of the trip, I will have to deal with rain again, basically every afternoon, and will need to be off high elevations by noon because of lightning, a discipline I haven't been having to practice.

Also, am approaching the final big waterless stretch, up to 22 miles, so that will feed my thirstophobia. If "Your pack weight is the sum of your fears," then my fears are typically represented by 6.6 lbs of water in my otherwise ultralight pack.

The two and a half days from Lake City to here were long, hard in places, and beautiful. Spent one whole day, most of 23 miles, above timberline in beautiful weather, other than the ever-present wind. Shared small parts of the trail with the Hardrock 100 racers. Getting to see the Grenadiers again was special, even if the climb up from the Animas to Molas Pass was as much a trudge as I remembered.

Getting ready to head out for the last stretch to Durango. Cannot believe it is here.
