This has been an incredible hike! The deserts, the mountains, the praries, the creeks, the snows, all of it has been amazing. There were lots of roads to walk but most were just 2 track and that was OK. There was lots of solitary time and I enjoyed that. I saw so much wild life in the open areas it was hard to believe.
Am I sad to have not completed the whole thing in one fell swoop? A little, yes, but not much. There had been many small set backs that had eaten away at my buffer time. I was feeling quite pressured to just keep moving no matter what or I would have to quit with just a day or 3 to go and head home. I have obligations to my students to begin set design by the middle of September but really it should start sooner. Now, when I return to complete the last thousand miles, the pressure will be off. I can leave a little more time. The hike will have a verry different feel.
My previous 3 thru-hikes were straight thru and they succeeded in that way. That was lucky. So the 4th is split. That's OK with me. Maybe it is a relief. It also gives me, for the first time, a few weeks this summer of unplanned time at home! Cool! Hmmm, what to do with that.
To all you wonderfull thru-hikers still out there, don't feel sad for me. Have a great hike! Do what ever feels right and makes sence for you. I met most of the NOBOs but only briefly. It would have been nice to spend more time together but we know each other through the continuum of the trail, that linear society of thru-hikers.
Happy hiking to you all,
