Start trip north

John drove me to the Deming restaurant where we met Keith at 1130...oops it was 1230 NM time so we lost an hour. Larry L. was our support crew: he rode back to Tucson with John. After lunch, Keith went over the route using the Ley maps. He pointed out probable water sites and helpful trail directions. En route he advised several Border Patrol agents of my presence and purpose. Met two agents as we deposited our water two gallon water cache. I did not enter a POI to nail down this location because of my GPS ignorance. On to the border: As the first key photographic moments presented themselves...the start at the trail at the border, Keith, myself, et al, the camera batteries went dead. I had just changed them. So, this moment will have to be taken on faith. The Columbus Museum had closed by the time I passed but I was able to read the different informational signs posted on the grounds, i.e., Pershing's reconstructed reviewing stand, pictures of the soldiers in camp and the town as it was. I proceeded to miss the cemetery where three water spigots provided a Columbus last chance for water. I was already carrying four liters so this hydrating moment too passed. Past the elementary school and able to hike until near dark. Pitched tent with elevated view of valley. Mother and calf were talking to each other all night so I wasn't really alone. Don't think I will set up camp so close to dark: still seeking most efficious approach on pitching new tent; cooking with new stove (hard to light stove with Bic in wind), and lying to sleep so close afterwards to jamming down dinner. Nice to do this in the light. Live, learn and improve.
