Remain in Deming
When doing the final packing, I found I had left my lower pant legs and gaiters in my car. Determined such items might be critical for the trip so I will lay over, retrieve them from Keith and leave the next day. Keith responds in his nonjudgemental way and invites me to accompany him to the Deming Garden Club luncheon at noon. He will pick up at my new location.I move from the more expensive Best Western back to the American Inn where I stayed in May.
The lunch was attended by a dozen local gardeners. Obviously, gardening in the desert takes a special knack and a knowledge base unique to this very dry climate. Folks say Deming has not had a measurable rain fall since last September. I sit across from Carol. She and her husband, John, are emigrants having moved to Deming from California about eight years ago and made a successful transition to this area. The luncheon is followed by a lecture on succulent plants. Before this day started I had no idea what a succulent plant was: now I have a much greater appreciation how life can adapt to even the driest conditions.
