Trying it again
Leave as planned circa 0430 and walk the five blocks to Denny's where I put away a filling breakfast and take a sandwich to go for dinner. Just before leaving the northeast Deming suburbs, I meet John, Carol's husband, who had been on watch for me. He gives some helpful navigational comments as he is familiar with the route to Ft. Cummins. Both he and Carol use their ATVs to travel and explore about the local country. Although the water sources are marked on the Ley maps, I carry 5 liters at this point since I need to build my confidence in the maps' water info as a current, accurate resource. Ley's info is from last year and the earlier 2011 north bounders have moved through nearly two months ago. I walk with the heat. Mentally I tell myself this is just a matter of moving with the temperature...keep an easy pace...stay on trail...use the umbrella for shade both while walking and resting. I don't need to hike during the noon hours but the heat sustains itself even through afternoon when it might even be warmer. But once it is over 104 does it make much difference? So, I move on. Got off trail later and it took time and energy to relocate and resume course. My original goal was to camp near Ft. Cummins; however, tonight I camped by the detention dam. This is a large earthen dam and no water to be seen.
