Tourist Day in Silver City

Great sleep last night. I do still like beds! Ate a wonderful breakfast at
Vicki's. Started walking over to the college to check out their Native
American pottery exhibit and ran into The Great Race. It's a soap box Derby
type car race. The cars are pushed by 2-3 runners then allowed to pick up
speed downhill then other teammates push and pass off the car again. The
race course was probably 1/2 mile long and they did 4 laps. We were able to
see them go thru the mud pit. There were college and high school divisions
and lots of spectators of all ages. It's been an annual event since 1967.

We did get to the wonderful exhibit. Then Wendy met us. She has been
involved in a student mural project. She has gone to several schools and
helped them make ceramic hands. Today the hands were being mortared to a
block wall at a park. We got to help by adding hands to a 3ft triangular
area. Eventually every kid in the district will have a "hand" in the
project. Another example of the community spirit of Silver City!

We ate dinner with Wendy and her brother again. This time at the Buckhorn
Saloon in Pinos Altos several miles north of town. Had my first beer of the
trail and a delicious steak.

I had a great and busy day but I never did have time to answer emails. I've
read every one and so appreciate them. I should have time after this next
section. We will take almost a week off to go the PCT kickoff near San

OK. Time for bed. Will be back hiking in the morning.

Nancy Hikes The Continental Divide Trail

"I wish I knew where I was going. Doomed to be carried of the spirit into the wilderness, I suppose. I wish I could be more moderate in my desires, but I cannot, and so there is no rest." John Muir
