Continental Divide Trail Map

Pie Town

Those of us sleeping on the porch had to move inside due to the light rain that fell early in the am...just after the rooster started to crow. And, we were all surprised when it also snowed in the early morning. Big, thick flakes.
Well,my plan is to cease denial and pursue professional treatment for the foot. Our original group is moving on and doing very well. While sad to see them go, I am proud of their team work and the progress they are making. Nita will loan me her car for the 70 mile trip to the Magdalena Clinic which is staffed by a Nurse Practioner. I make an apt for 1330 and am to make it on time. She says it is a full thickness wound extending under several toes of the right foot. Silvadene cream is the topical cream prescribed and Cephalin is the oral med - take twice a day until gone. It will be at least 5 days of off the feet to achieve optimal, quick recovery. Keep moist (not dry). Bathe in warm soapy water once a day at least. Elevate foot. Stay off feet. You may continue to incur on going problems with consistent mechanical impact, ie. hiking with pack. Keep it wrapped in gauze and an Ace bandage. These are reasonable conditions but I don't see how I can follow them at the T House. Other hikers offer their treatment approaches in good faith.
At this point, I am interrupting my hike. My new plan will be to get back somehow to Albuquerque where my car is parked. Offer some trail angle assistance as needed to my group. Then, car camp around New Mexico for one or two weeks seeing its historical and geographical highlights. I look forward to visit my brother in AZ and some friends as I make my way to rejoin Lon in Boise, ID where one of our two sons lives. For the last 200 miles this has been especially tough. Trail - 1: P Smurf - 0.
I think another preparatory action would be to walk with actual pack wieght on the Wisconsin roads for at least two months before re engaging in this effort. Otherwise, I see myself as having been in good physical shape to have continued.
