First day. Good company.

At Mile 15.9 of the CDT on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 (7:10 PM).

Google Maps link to my location:

This was a great first day and Earth Day. I woke too early but that meant a leisurely shower and being ready on time. There was a hiker box to leave my HEET (alcohol stove fuel) in.there were lots of hikers milling about the parking lot. 3 of us were headed to start at crazy cook today. Some would start tomorrow and othere started days ago and had hikes here to Lordsburg. The Econo Lodge was giving a hiker. Discount of 38 per night.
Teresa of the CDTC was there to see us off. John a local would be driving and Val, new to the CDTC was learning the ropes. The drive was full of lots of good exciting conversation and some pretty rough travel. About a mile from the border we almost got stuck in some deep nasty mud. It took a few tries but John got us out.

We made the terminus by 9:15am. The picnic table was gone again, probably 30yards across the border. The white truck was brown with mud. Even the windows were covered. We did a bunch of photos and started walking around 9:30.

It was hot getting up to 90. And the sun was intense. We took a few pseudo shade brakes. it was up and over Sheridan pass and down to the water cash by 4:45pm. The guys were planning to camp there . I kept moving till 6:30.

From the cashe I headed xc back to the trail. After about. 15 minutes I actually found a post in a cairn and then another and another. There was even a bit of tread to follow sometimes. I never broke out the gps today. It was a good start.
It is very windy at times but I am feeling good
Time to get some sleep!
Day 1 is a success!
