Towering cliff walls in the Middle Fork of the Gila River

Adventures in the Gila

We had quite the journey through the Gila Wilderness over the past 5 days. In 4+ months of hiking we have seen a lot of different kinds of terrain, but this was something entirely new - walking pretty much IN the river bed, crossing the river hundreds of times, surrounded by towering cliff walls and gigantic trees.

A definite highlight was visiting the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument after 2 days of hiking in the river. We also got to see a female spotted owl that was perched in a sandstone cave near the dwellings! We were pretty psyched to soak in the hot springs that night, a counterbalance to the many many many cold river crossings...

While hiking through the hills today after leaving the river canyon, we had a chance meeting with a hermit named Doug who has been living on his own in the mountains for 18 years. He gave us an impromptu tour of his garden and showed us how to fashion needle and thread from agave and yucca plants. Lots to tell there, but you'll have to ask us for the full story another time.

At the moment we are feeling a bit sad that this great adventure is coming to a close so soon. It has been an incredibly special experience and we are savoring every moment of being on the trail together. Next time we update... We'll be done!
