Here comes the sleet!

This morning, the moose were back in the creek below. It was a really cold hike, freezing sleet and hail for much of the day. This was still familiar trail for me, and I pressed on pretty quick through the gorgeous ridges and valleys. Did I mention it was really cold? I pressed on to Stony Pass, where bicyclists can head down to Silverton below. The next section was really exposed and barren, and I decided to shut down really early for the day, despite only covering 15 miles today. It was only about three thirty and I still had a few hours of light left, but I was getting way too cold. I'd run into a CT Thru Biker from New Zealand, and was setting up camp when he rode down to the road below. Fortunately, I caught him as he began going down the road in the wrong direction - that would have been a long, cold ride back up and over the pass.

Tomorrow morning, I'll be leaving the Colorado Trail and hitting up new terrain along the CDT. There's only about 80 miles for me to cover until I reach Wolf Creek Pass, and I'll have to press hard to reach town before I run out of food. I've shut down earlier than I'd planned the past two nights and I'm about ten miles behind schedule already.
